Operation 7 is a fast paced first person shooter (FPS) publisher by Netgame. Battle it out with up to 24 players per game in three different modes: Death Match, Survival and Head Hunting. New players start with 30,000 in game gold but will need to level up a few times before being able to use more powerful guns. Operation 7 allows for extensive gun customization and also allows players to purchase new gear such as body armor and belts.

Operation 7 is NetGame’s answer to the growing number of MMOFPS games now available. Like Combat Arms, War Rock, Soldier Front and Crossfire, Operation 7 emphasizes modern day combat so expect to go in to battle with the usual suspects; AK-47s, M4s, MP5s and so forth. Strangely, Operation 7 requires players to confirm their age (must be 18 or over) before playing. The game must be launched from the official site though the desktop icon will automatically bring players to the appropriate site. After character creation, you’ll be put through a brief mandatory tutorial that has laughable voice acting. The final leg of the tutorial contains a short training obstacle course similar to the one found in Call of Duty 4 which puts to test the gameplay basics introduced earlier in the tutorial; aiming, firing, reloading, using grenades, running, ducking and so on.

Back to Basics

After the tutorial, you’ll find yourself in the game lobby with a list of rooms hosted by other players. Operation 7 has three game modes; Head Hunting, Death Match, and Survival. While all three modes are team based, the most common mode is Death Match where two teams battle it out for the most kills. Survival is last man standing and in Head Hunting, players defend their team general while hunting down the opposing team’s general. Rooms support up to 24 players, though this varies by game mode selected. The host may also tweak such settings as game time, friendly fire and number of kills required for victory. Luckily, Operation 7 boasts a large map selection with a total of 17 maps as of this writing. Suffering through Combat Arm’s total of 3 maps during Open Beta, I’ve learned to appreciate variety.

Once I actually started playing Operation 7 my first observation was how familiar everything looked. If you’ve played any of the FPS games I listed earlier then Operation 7 will look and feel very similar. After further play though, some key differences do emerge. For instance, you cannot pick up the gun of a defeated player. Instead, enemies drop a backpack which heals you if walked over. This indirect healing method makes up for the helpless feeling found in other shooters where you’re running around with 10 hp waiting to die. Operation 7 also allows players to lean to the right or left when behind a wall or other form of cover. I’m sure this may have its uses but from my experience, its more practical to run out guns blazing than sit behind a crate leaning out. Grenades are another issue. While friendly fire is almost always disabled, your grenades still manage to kill you if you’re within range. One of Operation 7′s weakest points is the game graphics. Though not horrible, they have a very bland feel. Nothing is particularly attractive and the visuals compare poorly to older games like Combat Arms.

One Shot, One Kill

Operation 7′s catch phrase is ‘It only takes one shot! One who aims first, kills first!’ and for the most part this is true. In any map with open areas, its vital to aim and fire from a distance since it is nearly impossible to survive long enough to get into close combat. This definitely gives the game a more realistic feel over its rivals. New players start with a large amount of in game gold which they can use to buy new guns and gear though most of the better stuff requires a minimum level. Most guns don’t expire in Operation 7 but do lose durability and require constant repairs.

Final Verdict: Fair

Despite several new features and a large selection of maps, Operation 7 just doesn’t offer enough to differentiate itself from the slew of MMOFPS games already available. The graphics are unimpressive but games are fast paced and more realistic than rival FPS’s.
